Preston Performance Troupe

Weekly dance and life skills program for 13-18y.o's to make new friends, learn dance skills and have alot of fun. Participants will engage in a number of different workshops each week, and will work together to great routines which will be performed at concerts and festivals throughout the year. 

The Preston Performance Troupe meet every Friday from 5pm till 7:30pm (Starting 1st June). Northland Youth Centre, Shop J63A Northland Shopping Centre, Murray Road, Preston 3072

North Melbourne Performance Troupe

Participants aged 13-19 take part in dance classes in a variety of styles and create routines together. Youth also learn skills to help them to be confident and happy in life. There are many opportunities throughout the year to perform at concerts and festivals, and to attend Mayibuye camps and conferences.

North Melbourne Performance Troupe meet every Friday 4pm till 6:30pm (starting June 8th). North Melbourne Community Centre Hall, 49-53 Buncle Street, North Melbourne 3051

Melbourne Performance Troupe

Youth aged 17-25y.o engage in weekly dance classes and life skills training, choreograph routines and perform at numerous concerts and festivals around Victoria. Participants also have opportunities to attend Mayibuye's youth conferences and multicultural camps. The Mayibuye Performance Troupe aims to promote cultural awareness and empower youth to become positive role models and community leaders.

The Melbourne Performance Troupe meets every Tuesday 5:30pm  - 8pm at the Multicultural Hub on Elizabeth Street

Morwell Performance Troupe

Participants (13-19y.o) engage in dance/life skills training once a week after school. Participants perform at multiple concerts and festivals around Victoria throughout the year. The Mayibuye Performance Troupe aims to promote cultural awareness, increase empathy and understanding, and empower local youth to become positive role models for their peers.

The Morwell Performance Troupe meets every Wednesday 4:30pm - 7at Gippsland Multicultural Services on Buckley Street.

Stand Centre Front - Young Performers Conference

Mayibuye’s “Stand Centre Front: Young Performers Conference" brings together young dancers from around Australia to learn, be inspired and share their passion and experiences. Participants hear from members of the dance community, learn new skills from industry professionals and connect with like minded people. This year, students will discuss challenges around mental illness and how performing arts can be used to improve mental health and resilience. 

The Stand Centre Front Conference is a 2 day event, with a community concert at the end.

The next conference will be held on 19th and 20th of April at the Fitzroy Townhall.

TOUGH CHICKS - Dance and Life Skills Program

TOUGH CHICKS, a life and dance skills program for young women aged 13 to 25 years old.Participants will be working with Mayibuye in the life-skills workshops and special guest speaker, dancer and choreographer – Demi Sorono.

Demi Sorono - a standout performer in Australian's version of So You Think You Can Dance, reaching 4th in the competition. With no formal training, Demi's strong Bboyin paired with her focus, determination and passion paid off as she is now recognised throughout the dance industry. She will be working with participants in preparation for the Stand Centre Front - Young Performers Conference on Sunday 20 May 2012.

There is no cost involved. The 2012 Tough Chicks program has already begun, we aim to run another in 2013.

Adult HIV Education Program

Mayibuye is proud to be facilitating an Adult HIV Education Program put together by the Desmond Tutu Foundation, allowing us to offer the accredited course in Melbourne. Participants meet every week for discussions, group activities, assessment and receive numerous resources and videos from Mayibuye to enhance their learning.

The course runs for 6 months, and participants meet at 5:30- 6:30pm every Monday in Abbotsford.

Youth in Leadership Fellowship

Mayibuye’s “Young in Leadership Fellowship” young people to be trained as leaders and  run performance troupes in their communities.

In partnership with RMIT and The Torch, selected youth will work towards a Certificate 4 in Community Development, by participating in a leadership camp, mentorship and a number of skills enhancement weekends through the year.

This will allow us to empower young people and allow them to engage in a deeper learning around community development and their potential to create change.

Holiday Programs

Mayibuye runs an annual holiday program in Gippsland and Melbourne The group learn multiple dance styles growing their skills, participate in art and craft workshops and engage in a number of life skill workshops around vision, leadership, goal setting and self confidence.  A number of fun and challenging games are played, developing the youth's ability to think strategically and solve problems.
