Mayibuye is a Zulu word from South Africa that means ‘bringing back what was lost’. It evokes a time when everyone was happy and life was simple, filled with singing and dancing. A time before the Apartheid and before the societal destruction inflicted by drugs, alcohol and HIV.
Vision
Mayibuye aims to create generations of young people who believe that a better world is possible and are empowered and enthusiastic about seeing it happen within their life time.
Mission
We are a grass roots organisation that uses performing arts to facilitate educational opportunities for young people, who are vulnerable to negative peer pressures and at risk behaviour.
Our organisation has grown rapidly since its founding 2 years ago. In that time we have recruited over 40 volunteers and are now working on 12 community projects. We are currently established in South Africa and Australia, and are developing an initiative in Cambodia.
Mayibuye realised that the youth of today are facing some of the toughest challenges in history and the current generation of young people have the unique power to shape their future. However many of today’s young people do not have the skills or opportunity to be a catalyst for change in their local community. Song and dance is embedded within many cultures; however there is often no program in place to use this passion as a tool for empowering individuals and facilitating community development.
As a solution, Mayibuye has developed various projects to teach a range of dance disciplines and channel the passion of young people through dance. These activities are coupled with structured life skills and mentoring workshops, ensuring the youth are equipped with knowledge and skills to lead and promote a healthy lifestyle. Mayibuye hopes this will help to create positive change in local communities and help put an end to impoverished living conditions.
